Thanks for referring to Dunning and Kruger. I had heard the basic findings summed up by my brother, but hadn't encountered the source.

Meanwhile in chasing links I found the Wikipedia page on Naive Realism. Which explains a lot of the unwarranted assumptions of personal hostility we see from folks who regularly feel frustrated in their attempts to convince us that they are the sole possessors of the true interpretation of the facts.
