It is an important point yes. Like you said, the west is currently pretty bad with doing this. How many times I've heard people say something ridiculous and claim it is universal only because it is common in western culture. A relevant example is that adult and child sexuality was never accepted in the context of children being allowed to consent as opposed to only raped. Hell I have even heard people say all children are essentially asexual, though that myth is dying hard.
