The reasoning is that sex is a high stakes activity. A lot to gain but a lot to lose. Too much to gain to give it up, too much to lose to undertake it lightly.

Having sex late but unprepared and ignorant leads to losing too much. But getting from theoretical knowledge to hands-on experiences also means undertaking sex ill-prepared and also leads to losing too much.
