Considering that there's an entire industry of books written by women for men explaining that female pleasure matters and can occur through instruction....

And, that such books largely didn't exist prior to the 1880s........

This tells me that "making it up as you go along" didn't work well for centuries. Procreation is easy. pleasure is technique. And techniques can be taught.
