Why do you ask?

Some time ago I got annoyed by kratt's way of asking questions, and I cannot help getting annoyed again. Your message sounds too nosy.

You should at least have preceded your question with something like "Sorry for asking..." or "If you don't mind...". That would have sounded much better and more polite.

What if the original poster does not want to specify?
