Islamic culture kept the flames of knowledge burning all through Europe's Dark Ages.

The monks in the monasteries kept all knowledge from being extinguished but theirs was more in the form of scribes copying things than in actual scientific progress.

Knowledge definitely flowed both ways then. Islamic culture was progressing when European science was basically at a standstill.
