(Yes, I have been described as such. Even, at times, here)
as opposed to being compelled by fear-of-god to keep all of our "god-placed-rulers'" divine laws.
The only divine laws should be the ones in the holy book they revere. To have fear-of-god about the Bible (I am of course assuming they are Christian, being the majority religion of the USA) is logical. To place human-made laws at the level of divine law is "having another god before Me" - ie, idolatry, and, implicitly, polytheism, as it explicitly equals a human creation with a divine creation.
The other one said that he would rather take himself off the jury than to vote according to his conscience, in the event that his conscience was in conflict with what the law was.
That would be internally coherent (I disagree with the process, therefore I stay out of it). However, you can still point out that this would keep wrong and objectionable laws in place, and therefore ultimately contribute to further injustice. A juror resigning for a conscientious objection isn't a burden to objectionable laws; continued negative verdicts are. You have to vote with your conscience against the law so that your grandchildren don't have to choose one or the other.
