If the subject comes up again, and that person repeats their view, try coming back with something like "It's for the legal system to worry about taxpayer dollars, not the jury. The jury members' responsibility is to consider the facts of the case to reach an individual decision on the guilt of the defendant, and then to consider whether the offense should be an illegal act in the first place."

Jury nullification has not been done away with. It's there as a safety valve to stop the Law from going too far with things. As such, it's a method of self-regulation.

As far as distancing yourself from the people that you had this discussion with goes, why?

There's nothing wrong with a bit of interesting debate and discussion with people, just so long as it's kept friendly and good natured. No-one else will ever agree with absolutely everything you (or I) will ever think or say.

I have friends who I disagree with quite strongly about certain small things (as do they with me), but as the difference of opinion is only about a few things, we're still friends. It also makes for some very interesting conversations and debates about such things from time to time, which we enjoy.

Folks are entitled to their own opinions, Stah. I wouldn't fall out with someone over it, though.

Hope this helps,

T.
