There may also be some left behind who do not believe he's in a better place, such as skeptics who suspect there might be nothing but this place, in which case they feel the loss all the more and are not comforted by these promises.

Relief may be:
*the removal of stress or discomfort
*the feeling associated with the removal of stress or discomfort

Clearly you can only 'receive' the 2nd kind of relief, as one cannot receive anything if one is no longer around. The first may apply, but I believe stress and discomfort are preferable to not existing.
