These people were not treated any better or worse then the rest of us. How you were treated depended on how your attitude was. If you accepted responsibility and made an effort to improve yourself everything went as smooth as possible. The therapist literally saw 100's of S.O every week, so I'm sure he's heard it all. Nothing fazed him. Everyone was equal to him.
Did they not believe them, and try to convince them that they are attracted to kids?
He never confronted them on the issue if they were attracted to children if they denied it, unless they failed the polygraph and the question they failed "are you sexually attracted to children?" He generally believed them if they say they raped a child and didn't have a sexual attraction to kids as long as they at least took responsibility for the rape and it was wrong.
Or did they believe them. In which case did they have different treatment methods for such people that were different from the ones that are preferentially attracted to kids?
The one thing wrong with SOT is basically it's one size fits all. We were all stereotyped to what a sex offender was according to the abnormal psychology manual. They focused on what supposedly caused us to be the way we are more then focus on the crime. After the initial introduction of what you were convicted of it was more about prevention and all the horrible things that happened to you to cause you to behave in such a way. They worked on justifications, potential childhood trauma. Getting people to do so called normal activities, like dating age peers. They worked on prevention tactics like recognizing your triggers which can cause one to offend again.
Unfortunately for the true CLers the psych had a harder time dealing with us then the rapists. With them it was dealing with their anger and hostility towards women. With the CL they know it was an attraction, in their eyes an abnormal attraction so they tried to extinguish it. They tried to control our fantasies, they had us write a masturbation log. The psych and the PO frequently asked if we had any fantasizes involving children. From what I saw the rapist did not have to deal with this line of questioning. I didn't hear it anyway.
