Too many studies have been done which demonstrate that the physical affection from others is necessary to ones emotional well-being. Deprivation thereof, even when the subject receives positive verbal affection causes damage.

Its true that one won't die. But one won't thrive either.

Mental stimulation falls into the same category as physical affection. We've seen examples of people deprived of most-all mental stimulation. Unlike a cut-off of the air-supply, a lack of mental stimulation won't kill someone. But the results aren't healthy by any means.

Child neglect is seen by the authorities as a form of abuse. But since it involves a lack of interaction I suppose you don't see it that way?
