He never said 'harsh'. He said failing to discipline. Disciplining is good. It helps people learn what is acceptable in civilized society, to not disrupt other people's lives and make an ass of yourself.

Children can be assholes, and informing them of what is assholeish (like whining for someone to buy them something or making a scene over wanting to be spoiled in some silly way) often irritates people.

I agree with your views that friendship are good and that discipline can be excessive, but at the same time, don't go and attack someone just because they think that a lot of children lack discipline, because that I agree with.

Discipline isn't the problem, it's how people do it. The 'harsh' discipline is bad simply because it's not effective. It may 'work' temporarily by getting someone to shut up out of fear, but it doesn't cause any lasting changes in their personality through teaching them properly. Furthermore, they grow to detest that kind of discipline and over time become resistant to it or else despise the person and never advance as a person.
