it *did* improve my life

My relationship with an older man, starting when I was nine, was quite beneficial to me.

As it happens, there was nothing overtly sexual about the relationship (at least, on my part), but I am pretty sure the man was a boylover, and felt sexually attracted to me. In retrospect, I believe he left some openings for me in case I had been so inclined, but he didn't push anything and was a good friend. I am glad I had him in my life.

If I were gay, his friendship would have been even more important.
