In an advanced capitalist system like the one we have no, "self-reliance" often translates into a fancy, feel-good term about abandoning the poorest workers to the dictates of the market. As for small government, we NEED a government that is "big" in the sense that it provides needed social services and programs for us to keep the corporations from privatizing everything and bleeding us dry, but "small" in the sense of how it interferes in our lives. Keep in mind that the pro-rich often talk about "small government," and that is their excuse to privatize everything, thus allowing the rich to make a bigger killing than before.
