You might consider moving to a west coast city

A big, liberal, gay & pot-friendly west coast city -- like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, or Seattle. I believe the tolerance out here toward cultural deviants is probably the greatest in the US -- and as someone who regularly receives anonymous threats of physical violence (with none carried out), I wouldn't live anywhere else -- certainly not the more staid Midwest. I received one call recently (my cell phone number is at the top of my site) from a group of rowdy-sounding young men who were reportedly planning a "road trip" to Portland to kick my ass or something, and I just chuckled: I know I'm not the most popular person in this city, but anyone who thinks they're going to just drive in here and beat me up with impunity (like this is some hicksville in the hinterlands) is in for a culture shock.
