The perplexing thing is that I honestly believe the status quo, in general, knows better. It is almost as though they've given up on the denial of their own 'impurity' and have decided to reflect it onto children. And conveniently 'forget' how they felt or thought as a child themselves.
I am not trying to play armchair psychologist here. I just remember my own childhood well. And my childhood friends, who were no more 'innocent' than I was. Repressed, maybe, but still... And, due to all this, the repression of childhood has gotten worse, particularly these past few decades. The thing that helps me look optimistically at this is the notion that it is the children themselves, the current ones, who will eventually turn things around. The preteens and adolescents I know today are a far cry from the ones I knew even ten years ago in college. I am very impressed with their general outwardness and individualism. That certain attitude that the status quo might call...rebellious. Rebellious. That is sometimes an accusation of someone who is simply being honest to their nature. And these are also the parents of the future. I think we will keep fighting the good fight. And I believe we will progress through that. But my prediction is that it will be them, not us, who makes the most paramount difference. It all sounds corny, I know. But this is just how I feel. |
