The Wiccans had a problem with him associating himself with them.

As for them pointing out that the PJ guys are moslty atheists comes as no surprise to me.
Though it would be easy to accuse me of bias (and I refuse to proffer any sort of counter-argument on the grounds that I believe it would be an exercise in futility), my experience is that atheistic moralists are much more vicious than the religious ones.

Also, the endorsement given by one of our own resident religio-bashers(which I will continue to quote even though I don't particularly like the guy anymore) suggests that the religious moralists are more likely to surprise us with a degree of acceptance whether immediate or eventual.

That coresponds with my own personal experience, although, in my case, it may be because I'm an insider :p
