Most things invariably look bleak from the 'prison' window of an oppressed viewer, and pedophiles are in that category I will admit. This is the 'Society as problem' argument that most people would reject.

Will you shut up with the constant "ad populum" arguments?

Society is not effectively better or worse than at any other time in history, just different. I don't know about your own country but I certainly do not see oppressed and grim-looking children.

So going from Emerson and Twain to Britney and American Idol is NOT decline? Oh yes, you base your opinions on how popular they are.

I hate crowdists.

Children are exceptionally good at coping - but you can see the signs and symptoms if you can get over your self-hatred enough to go near a child.

"than when I was at school, but probably with very different interests and priorities."

So your school was slavishly devoted to mindless popularity wars and fashion-obsessed consumerism?

"The media is awash with junk, that is no doubt, but there are some excellent TV programs available to cater for children, I did watch many avidly for years."

True. Problem is, children don't WATCH them.

"I would suggest you have missed out one of the major factors which is perhaps included in 'ouside influences' which is peer engagement."

Peer engagement is dependent on the environment in which children are raised. You *really* don't comprehend qualitative arguments, do you...

"I just don't buy this. If you have watched any TV programmes aimed specifically at children you can see the inventive ways that teachers use to engage and create interest in their pupils. The sheer delight is obvious to see and they seem just as excited at new things to do as they ever did."

What country are you from? This is from an American perspective, btw. But there is a general trend towards bureaucracy.

"We obviously live in entirely different societies, as for example the narrowing of their choices seems if anything to be expanding wildly to the extent that there is too much choice."

What do you mean by "choices?" Again, since you are utterly incapable of thinking outside the dictates of the crowd, you are incapable of seeing that many choices available to children are simply variations of the same thing.

By the way, I have advice for you in the link
