I did compose a reply to this, but I must have been distracted when I was going to post it.

I was shocked when I read about what happened to your friend. So much so that it caused me to utter an expletive, out loud, in the very early hours of Saturday morning. I hope I didn't wake anyone up.

I wonder how the police could justify damaging paintings and rare books when looking for video tapes. Even if he had somehow hidden video tapes inside or behind them, I would have thought that it would be possible to tell without actually doing any damage.

I hope that moving house, if your friend is still planning to do that, will allow him to put this horrible situation behind him, and I hope this will not adversely affect your friendship.

It is very sad to see what the country is coming to.
