Thanks for the explanation but I don't think you should blame yourself. The nutjob could have picked anyone against whom to make an accusation. There is no such thing as "guilt by association" so that fact that your friend knew you isn't part of the equation that triggered the police raid.

I am outraged (but not surprised) by the behavior of the authorities in this case but I'm afraid lies and deceit are their forte and are particularly intimidating on one's first encounter with the police.

If I were your friend I would certainly take it up with the Independent Police Complaints Authority. Your friend should have been given a copy of the search warrant that will state the grounds on which it was issued. He has the legal right to see a copy of this document. Once you have that it should set your mind at rest. Good luck.
