i've been watching the canadian mainstream news fairly carefully, at least the newspapers, and in the past year (aside from one editorial comment) i have not seen one instance of the use of the word paedophile in connection with any report on child sexual abuse, or child pornography.
as far as i can tell the canadian media (and by and large the population) are well able to differentiate.
furthermore - the canadian penal system maintains a policy of protective custody in all child related instances. everyone convicted of such crimes is automatically offered (it's an option, not compulsory) protective custody, in which case that person is placed in a facility that caters specifically to those who are colloquially known as skin hounds.
you meet a much better class of people in these places, and i can honestly assure you that i enjoyed my time there.
