which is not to say you may never be able to get through, but if i were in your position, i'd be asking a lot of why, should the topic come up again.

it's my guess she's either had some bad experience(s) of her own, or knows someone who has...

it's important to listen, i find, rather than talk - the more you know the easier it becomes to explain the difference between good and bad.
