Maybe you miss a bigger point

Reverence for murdered LG's aside, the media obsesses over children murdered, kidnapped, or raped today. Fewer kids are murdered today than 10 or twenty years ago, but the media stirs everyone up into believing it's an epidemic when it's actually an extremely rare occurrance. So excuse those of us who refuse to be drawn into emotional distress every other week just because the corporate media is saturating the national airwaves with constant despair. Of course it's a terrible thing when it happens. It's even more terrible when murdered little girls are used for political gain, public control systems, or simple profits, like Megan, Amber or JonBenet.
