Oddly enough, it is in the Northeast where the Puritans settled where we have the least religious influence now, and in the Southeast which was largely settled by economic migrants, often irreligious, where we have the most religious influence.

Then again, the Puritans were fairly well-educated for their time, and one of their radical beliefs that separated them from the mainstream church was their belief that sex was a good thing, not merely something to be put up with for the sake of procreation.

In fact, while the puritans certainly had their problems, they were not the killjoys that modern beliefs make them out to be, and were relatively enlightened for their day. As one example, at that time daughters were assumed to be the property of their fathers and were seen as economic resources, and some fathers forbade their daughters to marry in order to hang on to that economic resource as long as they could. In turn, quite a few daughters dealt with this by getting pregnant so that social pressure would force their father to let them get married. This was tolerated to some degree.
