...Is that they are so quick to pathologize any thoughts or behaviors that do not fit into their narrow-minded definition of "normalcy." According to them, if you experience anything out of the ordinary, it must be a symptom of some kind of maladjustment. Then, they take it upon their rather high-handed selves to "fix" you. I find that both ridiculous and insulting, because it assumes that you are somehow "defective" and in need of "repair" as though you are a mere machine. And even if you are somehow
defective, which I don't believe even for one second, I think it is quite presumptuous of the psychologists to assume that they hold the answers we need. The only thing they know how to do is impose society's currently-held values on people. Case-in-point: Homosexuality. Did you know it used to be defined as a disease in the psychologist's "bible"? They used to believe it needed to be treated and cured. Then, society changed its mind about gay people and decided that being gay is a normal expression of sexuality. Viola! No more homosexuality in the DSM-IV. What does this prove? That all psychology is is the forced application of society's currently-held values. In a way, I guess you could call it a religion.
