"I can't believe 16 year olds are referred to as children, yet can get a licence and their own job."

No, they can't get their own job. If their parent wishes to withold permission, the under 18 is SOL unless they seek legal emancipation.

The same is true for the driver's license. Sure there are additional hoops for under 18s to go through. Those under 18 need a learners permit and will not be allowed to take the basic test without it like a real human being. Those under 17 1/2 are further required to have proof that they've taken and passed a Driver's Ed course. Where a real human being can just take the test and pass without the prior steps. But all that is moot if the parents won't sign off on the DMV paperwork.

So no, its not really the case at all that they can get their own job or driver's license. Its still the their masters who can deny them that possibility without even lifting a finger. If junior says, I'm getting a job and a driver's license, all the denier needs to say is, "That's fine with me if you can do it without me."
