"Totally uncivilized, we savagely took what we needed or even wanted. I imagine rape was the normal sexual activity;"

I imagine it as otherwise.

Primates are social, but weak compared to most of the critters that prey upon them.

Humans are weaker still and, without tools, lose in fights with the smaller but stronger Chimp or Orangutan.

But what we do have going is a greater ability to plan and act as a group; to set aside personal interest and act as one to further our security and to feed our extended families.

With that as our sole advantage we didn't select for being tougher than the predator ( or even each other ) we selected for compassion, empathy and the ability to develop enough ToM to figure out how to benefit others enough to benefit ourselves.

But we are still an animal. And our social interactions still require a physical presence.

They say, "nobody knows you're a dog on the Internet." But if dogs were on the internet the Alphas would have to kill everyone else off. One dog tells another it has backed off a claim with a physical posture indicating submission. Response is instinctive and immediate, as too is the loss of status in the one submitting.

Humans are more complex, but our cues which can quell infighting are still the ones we carry on our faces. Writing allows an Emperor in Rome to extend his words across the globe, but it doesn't allow him to meet others face to face and break bread with them.

We aren't evolved for clans as large as we have. And therefore we assume entirely too much and imagine that what we do for the best of reasons others do because they want to inflict harm or don't care.

Fortunately Neoteny doesn't seem to have ceased entirely as an evolutionary factor. And maybe more "baby-faced" adults and the adults who are pacified by cuteness can save mankind from the problem of tribes too large to share a dinner table with.
