Looks like a pretty good hypothesis to me, much better than older theories. The "intense world" theory also appears to be backed up by new studies of physical differences in the brains of Aspies, having to do with a greater number of connections within the brain.
I have also noticed that Aspies sometimes end up developing better social skills than non-Aspies - it just takes longer to do so. This should not be terribly surprising: among the primates, length of childhood is correlated to overall intelligence. In most species, newborns stand and walk within minutes of birth; in humans, this takes at least months - and many other behaviors likewise take longer to develop. If a baby and a puppy are born on the same day, the puppy will likely be able to look after itself before the baby can even crawl - but no one doubts that by age 10 the baby will have capabilities far beyond those of any dog. This is, incidentally, related to another subject that has come up here before: neoteny. There is doubtless a link between neoteny and pedophilia; there may also be a link between neoteny and Asperger's. Among the Aspies I know closely, I have also seen other indications of delayed development that ultimately ends up going much farther than normal. |
