I think it's more a matter of people seeing what they expect to see. Few people recognize child lovers as a minority struggling for civil rights - they see us only as monsters, criminals, or at best lunatics. So when they see a story about a good character who has to conceal something about herself they never even consider child lovers whose situation is most analogous - rather, they think "who are the only good people who have to hide something about themselves? oh! gay people!" However, the movie appears to be especially popular with girls and women in cultures where there are strong social expectations to conceal their true feelings in the interest of social harmony. Clearly there is a universal experience here that many people can identify with at some level. |
