I understand that a tribe's customs are not laws of nature. I just thought them intriguing and they had me thinking about incest and paedosexuality.

It is an important point, though.

It cuts all ways.

Every culture is parochial. Every culture believes their way is the right way.

In this case it was more aimed at the West whose ways discard pedophilia and incest, than at the cultures which practice them. Although they too are parochial.

This also doesn't mean that there is nothing universal in human nature. But most often what is labelled as universal is nothing of the sort, but parochial.

In all caps, the literal word only makes sense after you know the acronym. It stands for White Educated Industrialized Rich Democratic. That is, exactly, the West. But in sociology it means to emphasize that the Western experience and perspective is very odd (ie, weird, smallcase) both compared to the rest of the world and the rest of history. A tiny minority of history is WEIRD. A tiny minority of geography is WEIRD. Despite the cultural influence of the WEIRD, only a minority of population is WEIRD (and is past its peak share of world population, as the whole West is undergoing demographic transition and a lot of the non-West is not.)

Thinking pedophilia is universally disapproved or even all that uncommon is WEIRD. Even for incest, though incest comes much closer to a universal, especially the close incest between parents and children or full siblings.
