Etymology of adolescence

It comes from the Latin word "adulescens" which was in use in Imperial Rome some two millennia ago.

However, the word really meant what today we would call a "bachelor." Even a 35-year-old man might have been called an "adulescens" in ancient Rome, as long as he wasn't married.
