Jane Eyre

This oft filmed tale is one that takes the usual turn. It begins with the heroine as an LG. But after a few childhood episodes, she ages instantly to adulthood so the REAL story can begin.

Fortunately for all, her adult story also includes a cute LG as her charge in her role as governess.

Many fine actresses have been attracted to the lead role.

I've already seen the version with Charlotte Gainsbourg as Jane and William Hurt as the brooding Mr. Rochester. And recently there was the version with Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender.

But I only recently caught the 40s version with Joan Fontaine and Orson Wells.

It features a trio of amazing LGs. Young Jane is played by Peggy Anne Garner whose iconic role is as the lead in A Tree Grows In Brooklynn. Jane's childhood friend is played by a young Elizabeth Taylor ( so early as to go uncredited. ) And the adult Jane's young charge is played by Margaret O'Brien.

If only all films which do the old "skip to adulthood" trick could remember that they are obliged to place at least one LG in the foreground every few minutes to keep us interested. ;p
