I suspect most people are pretty angry at this story and see it as unacceptable behavior. You shouldn't beat a child whether it's a stranger or your own son/daughter. There are some people with a different view and I suspect what you're seeing is a vocal minority.

Child love is a little less clear cut I suspect. There's been stories of girls running off with teachers and adult lovers and I've had these discussions with friends who have been more sympathetic to the story. I recall one incident like that perhaps a year ago and a couple I was talking to saw the problem being that he was a teacher and she was his pupil so he should have been more professional in his role. The fact that they were in love and ran away together wasn't such an issue, they appreciated it wasn't abuse or a kidnapping, just love that couldn't happen.

In public most people would play safe and say it's just wrong but I've found that when I actually talk to people then people can be more open minded and sympathetic when presented with real stories such as that.

Abuse is wrong between any two people, love is different.

I guess in the case of this incident perhaps it's the fact that he loved his child and was doing what he thought was right might soften the blow for the public but most would still say he crossed the line clearly.
