Ideals drive innovation. Ideals make us better people. I hope you don't really mean that one.
My contention is that ideals, like everything, are of limited value. They are okay as broad moral markers, but they are not--and never can be--absolute. Which sort of robs them of their validity as ideals, doesn't it? I think we should rename them optimals rather than ideals. We should aspire to them, but we should never believe that we are horrible people if we can't achieve it 100% of the time. And of course, ideals are not synonymous with laws. You should obey the laws (unless they're bad laws). You see? There's always a fuzzy zone with everything. Everything. |
