There's a fascinating history by Aram Sinnreich on the MPAA and RIAA's abuse entitled The Piracy Crusade that you might like.

One of the more interesting bits is the point-by-point analysis of every move the RIAA took to abandon the music fan and the music store as viable business models.

You go from the 60s era where the industry is actively keeping the midlist alive and trying to broaden the genres while also promoting the locally based independent retailer who can keep tabs on the customer base and personalize recommendations.

They were still exploitive as Hell towards the talent. But at least they seemed interested in facilitating the recording and distribution of more music if it could make a buck.

Before they were even aware of the downloading issue the RIAA had gutted the midlist, killed their R&D departments, sold-off most genres but a handful and invested everything in bubblegum pop Youtube celebrities who could sell t-shirts in big Summer tours even if they only had one or two albums in them. Meanwhile they'd incentivized the destruction of music retail and its abandonment in favor of the Big Box store which exists to sell moar diapers ( and merely happens to have 50 music CDs in the back. )

Lo and behold once piracy rears its "ugly" head ( despite years of insiders pleading to create a viable MP3 selling platform and the RIAA's refusal ) what is being traded? Not the boy-bands. Its the out of print midlist, its obscure jazz-fusion and zydeco albums.

AND, the wicked pirates going online to find what the RIAA refuses to sell end up expanding their interests enough that they spend more on actual CDs over those who don't pirate at meaningful numbers for every income bracket and every demographic regardless of how little or how long they've been online.

They are the loyal music fan. And to the RIAA, they are the enemy.
