Leave it to you to pick up an uncharacteristic one-time usage.

Why did I use it?

Because Ethan refuses to cite in response to Hajduk's numerous requests ( where the phrase is often used. )

Its as if he has decided that everytime an objection is made at GC, it must be Dante's fault, that Dante is the ringleader, and that only Dante merits the majority of the responses.

I'm really rather tired of him going so far out of his way to avoid answering the questions of others and instead reply to every little thing I said.

Can it be personal?

Well, in your case you had to avoid dozens of instances of Hajduk using "man-up" in order to single out the one case where I used a Hajdukism rather than the phrasing I've been using all along in citation requests.

So I guess that the phrase is perfectly acceptable to you until I choose to use it as a nod to another. That your objection is me, rather than the phrase.

As to the author of the article; I hope that she never tries to write for anyone with a sense of perspective; perhaps Bitch magazine?

But if hanging around with the kind of feminists who read Bitch and who use "rape" metaphorically to refer to what an editor did to their piece makes me a hypocrite, then I prefer the company of hypocrites.

Aaaaaaaaand somebody really needs to read John McWhorter's book The Language Hoax. The notion that language limits thought ( the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis ) has been long-debunked within linguistics. But its still alive and well in shoddy journalism and in the popular imagination.

Language is really a matter of context. But I suppose that this incompatible with absolutist notions about what phrases must never be uttered ( even by feminists about themselves. ---- the hypocrites. )
