I know you are making a point here (and a good one), but factually this is only half-true. We know what the world is like when most people don't learn how to swim, because this was the case just a little more than a century ago - and the result was a lot of deaths due to drowning. At present, drowning is still one of the leading causes of death for children, and it is quite likely that a ban on home swimming pools would decrease this - but pools with lifeguards and ubiquitous swimming classes for children have led to a large decrease in drowning deaths. I suppose we could draw some more analogies from that fact, now that I think about it. ;-) |
