The main issue I have with Rand ( and Heinlein for that matter ) is the notion that lesser people have a duty to step aside when great men enter the room. I've seen that one spouted by many; not one of whom believed that they are the lesser. It appeals to the snob who believes that others are holding them back or not recognizing genius when they see it. But its reactionary and plays into the hands of the Galileo gambit fallacy ( which is just argumentum ad populum flipped on its head. )

You mean like the snobs who think kids' lib is an ideology for those too selfish to realize that liberating kiddies' sexy bodies is selfish?

omfg, did I just criticize Rand for not being selfish enough?

I know many libertarians have been created by reading Rand. I cannot deny that. And especially she had a relevant role in bridging the gap between the inter-war libertarians and the generation of libertarians active after the 60s.

But, seriously, no serious academic libertarian today quotes Rand. Except maybe for "the smallest minority is the individual" or when they are talking to the choir. And it is not only because of the controversy with Rothbard; it really is because her theoretical contributions are scant, even though her PR management was strong enough to set the stage for later libertarians.

Much like a "Christian fiction" novel may convert someone, but nobody serious quotes from a Left Behind movie to support a theological position.
