The evidence is quite good that pedophiles account for a large proportion of child sex abuse (as society defines it), and an even greater proportion if you exclude abuse from within families. The evidence is good that they abuse children sexually at a far higher rate than teleiophiles. Recognizing those facts is part of establishing common ground with the person you are trying to convince -- identifying what you share. See Jonathan Haidt's "The Righteous Mind" for the importance of this in changing hearts and minds.

According to Agent Lanning of the FBI who is considered to be one of the world's foremost experts of the subject, true pedophiles account for approximately 8% of such offenders, while the vast majority are situational offenders. The percentage of pedophiles amongst the general public has subsequently been estimated at around 2%. So pedophiles would commit such acts at 4x the rate of the general public, but still account for a small minority of offenders nevertheless.

The numbers are somewhat comparable to African Americans and homicide rates. African Americans make up about 12% of the US population and commit 48% of all homicides at a rate that is 4x the rate of the general public. The main difference is that blacks make up a large minority of murderers because they are a larger minority than pedophiles. Now compare and contrast how African Americans are perceived compared to pedophiles.

As someone who fits both bills to a certain degree (I'm mixed race and a hebephile as well as a pedophile), I almost feel like people give me too much credit as an African American and not enough as a pedophile. I definitely feel like prejudice against pedophiles is much worse and harder to deal with. I have zero recourse as a pedophile and hebephile unlike as a racial minority.

I think we may have to stop being "uncle toms" as pedophiles and stand up for our rights peacefully like Martin Luther King. I also feel we will need our Malcolm X's in order to make us look like moderates in comparison and scare mainstream society into taking our side as the only viable option. But then again, maybe the "uncle toms" have to come first and perhaps we're not even ready for a Martin Luther King let alone a Malcolm X. I will acknowledge your efforts even if I can't wholeheartedly support all of them and wish for much, much more. In due time, I suppose.
