Although its a very perverse narcissist that tries to turn self-hatred into a claim to superiority. But it can be expected when the context is not a claim being made by a person to his people but by someone aspiring to assimilation with his haters.

And wouldn't the narcissist prefer to be broadcast by the evening paper to the millions for self-hate than to to be speaking about pride to a few thousand?

Those who aren't narcissists will eschew the popularity contest in favor of influencing the outliers who in turn shape policy. But meeting with folks behind the scenes just doesn't get the same puff to the ego. And standing back to let the Establishment take credit for a more enlightened policy shift you whispered in their ear REALLY doesn't suit the egomaniac.
