I've attended some rallies, but they're not my favorite thing. One sign I saw tickled me especially, though:

"What do we want? Incremental improvement!
When do we want it? In a reasonable timeframe!"

It's an interesting insight that your view (and apparently a common one on GC) of pedophiles' situation can be compared to the slogans of the most radical liberationists for other minorities. Usually I'd just say it's a benign difference of temperament. But the radical assertion in the pedophile case that adult-child sexual activity is just fine earns the hatred and disbelief of society, while the shortcomings of disability groups are not threatening.

All of the Deaf community quotes you give are entirely consistent with my position. Even If given the chance to become hearing, most of us would choose to remain Deaf. . I've said that I wouldn't take a pill to make my attraction to young girls go away -- though I would take one to give me a full attraction to adult women. To the extent that deaf parents actively wish for their newborn niece or nephew (of hearing parents) to be deaf, then I'll say they are in line with the radical view. The majority of Deaf people are in favor of cochlear implants, though I gather many think those children should still be schooled in ASL -- at least until it becomes clear in several years that their hearing is good enough. That's the kind of compromise I associate with pragmatists. As a side note, the Deaf community is unusual in that necessity has been the mother of invention of a beautiful language (several around the world, actually) and associated culture.

Compare how the "but" clause negates all that precedes it

We're in a contrastive context here. If I left off the "but" in that context it would make no sense.

I have a lot more experience with minorities of various kinds than you might think. I won't get specific to avoid risking giving away personally identifiable information.

One angle to consider is that if you have a fairly superficial acquaintance, minorities will stick to the public radical line, especially if they are speaking to a Dante and know Dante's views. For some of them, if you get to know them better, they will freely admit to the limitations of their condition.

As for the rest of the morning's crop of replies to me from you and others... I find nothing both relevant and convincing in any of them. As things become divergent, it's time to bow out. You can remember it as you all having effectively rebutted my views. Nope. Just outvoted.
