To remove the aspect of parental consent would also place a higher burden on parents to focus on their child and their child's development. A parent could no longer ignore their child and just rely on the legal system to sort out whatever might interfere with their plan for the child's upbringing. Instead, the parent would actually need to educate their child on sex so that the child could be more prepared to deny consent, should the choice arise.
Of course, parents would still fail in the same ways that they do now, but there would be quite the opportunity to raise arguments calling for parents to take more interest in their children's development. "If you don't teach your child about sex, someone else will." The same statement can be made today, but parents feel safer, neglecting their children, with the laws in place. Although, all I have suggested is a major step forward, and likely too large of a step to take any time soon. However, it would be a great triumph for the rights of children. |
