They hate the imaginary monster they think lurks behind the label. But you are neither the monster, nor the label. Those who know you know this isn't true. Maybe some of them are ready to see the label undone by seeing what Lindsay referred to as the "human face of Pedophila." Though I always counsel caution over any choice to out oneself. Most strangers mean you no harm. And those who know you mean you no harm. So the only thing you need fear is being associated with the label they hate. But that's another struggle entirely. When I chose to help the stranger who dropped their wallet I do so without thinking that I must come out to them or confront beliefs I don't even know they have. ( Heck, they may also believe that Atheists are Satanists, that artists are emotionally distraught. That Sci-Fi fans are socially backwards. Or they might not. But an act of kindness is not an opportunity to seek out ignorance in hope of demolishing it. And I've got too many labels to let it keep me up at night nor to paralyze my actions. ) Dante |
