It is theirs. There are many and many out there who believe us to be lurking around every corner, seeking to snatch up their child.
"Man arrested after kidnapping and raping a 12 year old girl. Story at 11." The story at 11 sadly does not mention that the 12 year old girl left willingly and went with the man of her own accord, nor does it mention that the man did no more than stimulate her with his fingers. This leaves many with these visions of daughters, their daughters, being brutally raped, beaten, and scarred both physically and mentally. It's natural that they would feel fear, for they know no different. Then you have the story occasionally of someone who truly did rape, and even murder the child. Naturally, that instills even more fear. I had an AG close to me once (emotionally, she actually lived quite far away). There was a case near her of a young girl meeting a man in much the same way as I met this girl. He went great distances to find her, meet her, rape her and then murder her. As that story unfolded, the mother of this AG felt very concerned about her closeness with me and forbade her from ever speaking to me again. She is no longer an AG, she's legally and truly, an adult by now, but I have not heard from her since then. There are plenty of parents who get paranoid over the stories they hear on the news and assume them to be frequent occurrences, for the stories of "young girl befriends older man and share delightful experiences with each other" never make the news. |
