I'd definitely agree with AK47 on the Glock 19 for concealed carry. It's a great place to start for someone unfamiliar with guns. As far as home defense, it's hard to go wrong with a shotgun, though I know no more than AK47 about shotguns. I'm not very familiar with the home defense guns he suggested, but I trust his knowledge and judgement on them.

It would also be prudent for you to get some basic training with firearms from someone who's been shooting for a long time. They are very safe when handled properly, but if handled carelessly, whether through ignorance or recklessness, they can be quite dangerous. I've seen far too many body parts with gaping holes because the gun owner was careless. I'd hate to see the headline: "Pedophile accidentally shoots himself. Good riddance."

Also, look up your local laws concerning firearm ownership and carry. You might live somewhere that it's fairly acceptable to open carry, or you might live somewhere that even if your jacket comes apart enough to show the gun for a brief moment you could be arrested, despite legal concealed carry. Or you might not be able to carry at all, depending on where you live. You also will likely need a permit or license to carry. Again, it all depends on where you live, so find out. If there are any reputable gun stores near you, you could probably go and ask those working there for some information. They'll usually know a fair bit about their products as well as applicable laws (unless it's one of those large "outdoors" type stores that just happens to have a small section for guns). They might even offer classes there so you can get some training.

Good luck and be safe, yoda. :)
