They want to be able to play the "oh we are so open minded and concerned for civil rights card" but at the same time do nothing or worse than nothing to actually defend us. After all, the worst thing you can do for a cause is not to contradict it skilfully but to defend it ineptly. So, they pretty much got it right. Defending the indefensible marginalizes all the more anything that would be associated with us. Master piece of defending a cause ineptly in order to harm it, I'd say!
