There are occasional sociopaths like Bernard Madof, but these people are rare and are always exposed and disgraced within their lifetime.

In truth, he didn't seek out to screw people over. He simply sought out to be more recognized himself - and that took lying in an investment context, and eventually those lies ended up screwing people over. But if through a magical spell all his investments had turned profitable at the very last minute, everybody would have still been happy - and especially Bernie himself!
