This is actually a good point. I don't support either.
I think people of libertarian type points of view are way too dogmatic about things.
This is often true, but their critics are often at least as dogmatic without admitting or necessarily even realizing it.
Moreover, not all the people you'd lump under the umbrella of Anti-Government share a single ideology. Not even close. I do not buy into the assumptions of either libertarian ideology, e.g., natural rights doctrine, or democratic ideology, e.g., social contract theory.
A democratic government can either do legitimate, worthwhile things for society or it can't, and saying things done by one part of the government (i.e. the military) are legitimate and others aren't seems subjective.
This seems to be common among "libertarian conservatives," unfortunately. They often overlook the way the warfare state and welfare state have a symbiotic relationship. I've also never heard one convincingly explain how kicking hornets' nests around all over the globe qualifies as "defending America."
There are some places government should not go, yes; ultimately, though, I think there has to be some medium: a government that holds to certain principles about it's role that people can still hold responsible for certain needs.
I do not oppose the State out of faith in a set of principles, but in large part because I lack faith in any of the proposed justifications for monopoly power. Of course it is true that the State has provided some beneficial services to a great many people. So has the Church, but does that mean people should be compelled to submit to ecclesiastical authority? One could even say - not inaccurately - that this is true of the Sicilian Mafia as well. People have remarked about how the Mafia often keeps the streets clean and orderly. But I don't see why you should have to swear allegiance to the capofamiglia.
