I interpreted it differently, in our case we always ask how our week has been (I see A. only in the weekends).
Sometimes the conversation only lasts for 5 minutes, sometimes it takes an hour. But the interest is sincere and not because we "need" to ask.

Then again: English is not my native language and I occasionally misinterpret statements :-)

Fully agreed on the anti-materialism, also treated her always as a person on the same level and never ignored her.

In fact she is a much better person than me..
