If you had a child and lost her in strange place amongst unknown people for twenty minutes, I guarantee you would think differently. I know the stats too, thank you very much, but it has no bearing on the sinking feeling in your gut when a child goes missing. It is a visceral and uncontrollable feeling; at least for me it was.
What WAS worrying was that they were going swimming. People would not actively hurt a child, but this does not mean that it would be a priority to keep track of a strange child whose mates they assume to be nearby and in eye contact. Which means that the child might be swimming alone, no one paying attention and the 5F drowning as a result.
There was no danger of anyone losing sight of her and allowing her to drown. She knew how to swim, the pool was only four feet deep all around, and anyway it was filled with relatives interacting with her and her little sister constantly, including me.
